BCGL Banter: Week 7 Recap

Filed on October 24, 2024

FATTENED CALF, USA - We are all familiar with that timeless tale from the New Testament. The younger son of a rich man ventures off to find his way in the world — but falls so low that he longs for the food of pigs and returns home forlorn and destitute. A grand celebration ensues as the young man’s father spares no expense to highlight the return of his son — lavishing him with compassion and a hearty feast.

That Biblical feast has but one rival in all of history. That rival was the Grady Grunts celebration last week as they crawled up from 12th place and celebrated their first victory of the season. Just like the prodigal son’s return, Jeff Grady confided to reporters before the start of games that he “had sinned against heaven and [fantasy football]. [Jeff] was no longer worthy to be called [a fellow BCGL owner]”.

But the football gods showed compassion on their long lost son and provided him a feast of 195 points to best Losing INC and break through in the win column for the first time since last season. And all of the BCGL joined together in chorus to exclaim, “This brother of ours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.” At least for one week.

Here’s more of what happened in Week 7…

Grady’s Grunts 195.65, Losing INC 172.70
Grady Grunts played the role of prodigal son well as they notched their first win of the season. Losing INC received a strong performance from Baker Mayfield (53 pts) but could not overcome the absence of Tank Dell, Deebo Samuel and Tyreek Hill. The win was a bright spot for the Grunts but they remain in 12th place at 1-6 with a glimmer of hope that brighter days are to come.

Wall Street Journals 189.95, Poppers 169.75
The Wall Street Journals continue to show us that slow and steady wins the race as they won their fourth game in a row and continue their steady hold on the top spot in the league. The Poppers did not go quietly and this game might have been different had the Broncos ever thrown the ball to Courtland Sutton. The theme of a lonely WR would repeat itself across several games this week.

Braden’s Bandits 154.25, 2008 Lions 141.70
It only took 154 points for Braden’s Bandits to win but all you can do is play the opponent in front of you. The Bandits and Lions reversed their fortunes from Week 6 but both remain firmly planted in the middle tier of teams. The 49ers defense and Brandon Aiyuk’s season ending injury did nothing to raise the Lions spirits or their point total on the scoreboard.

Pongo Pack 179.45, Underdogs 160.25
One week after flying high as the toast of the league, Underdogs removed their superhero cape and returned to Earth. Like the proverbial blind squirrel, Pongo Pack somehow cracked the victory nut without any contribution from WR Rashid Shaheed or a Dallas Cowboys defense on bye week. But the Underdogs are the gift that keeps on giving to many opponents. Ho ho ho!!!

Uncle Rico 214.20, Paul & Glover Phenomenal Team 172.65
There’s one thing that Uncle Rico doesn’t hate — the win column. Josh Allen and Saquon Barkely did the heavy lifting for Uncle Rico while Paul & Glover continue their mid-season slide on the back of a three-game losing streak. Perhaps this win and a 2nd place standing will warm Uncle Rico’s heart as the holiday season nears. Only time will tell.

Mean Machine 218.05, Da Bears 173.80
Some of Da Bears recent magic was no match for the buzzsaw that has become the Mean Machine. Riding a four-game win streak, Mean Machine posted the top score for the week (218.05 points) and finds themselves sitting in 3rd place. Lamar Jackson (67 pts) did everything he could to help Mean Machine while also ignoring WR Zay Flowers all game to crush Da Bears hopes. Grrrrr!!!
